Personal Finance (Not Investing) • How does a recession impact my retirement?

Yes; although there are behavioral risks that are not portfolio-specific. One risk I wanted to avoid was the "hunker down" risk. If a major downturn hit early in my ER, I did not want to feel like we had to cut/delay spending or otherwise "hunker down" and worry about money, fail to re-balance etc. I retired in December, 2007.
My wife has us in hunker down mode. I keep showing her the data that show we are fine, but it doesn't help. Not sure why she's so conservative this year vs. the last four years of retirement. If we stick to her plan, we will be disabled and have $20M in the bank. I want to spend more now.
What are the chances you can get your wife to turn off the news? If she’s conservative so far this year and hasn’t been the few years previous to that, I think I know why.
