I sold my parents' house a few years ago after they died. Their place was not in the greatest condition and I wanted to be rid of it. The realtor told me that it is almost NEVER worth it to try to upgrade anything--carpets, drapes, kitchen, because buyers will rarely love what you did, and will want to rip it all out anyway. Make the place look presentable, but don't waste money on trying to make it look great...
