You have correctly deduced that I am not a marketer. When I bought, I didn't realize Tesla (Musk) is way into hype and rosy projections. So I have no issue telling the truth about my experience.
And that half of people have range anxiety, and the post above doesn't make it better, despite being well informed. It makes it worse... bc they see numbers, and statements that an EV loses half of the range in the winter and they freak out. (I use the seat heaters since my LEAF days, and see about 20-30% loss below freezing).
This is where Tesla's approach gets the human factor correct. The car computes all that stuff in real time, and tells the user 'You will get there with this much charge left in your tank'. And then its correct. If it can't make it to the destination, it tells you 'Let's go to this fast charger for 20 minutes, and then we will proceed to your destination, and arrive with this much charge left in your tank'. Once you drive the thing a couple times and it is correct, you learn to trust the car more than you would ever trust some number juggled in your own noggin.
But I don't own a Tesla and consider the range juggling in my head a feature and not a bug.
My tesla starts each trip by projecting rated efficiency with adjustments for elevation (as best I can tell it is not adjusting for temperature, speed limits, or factors other than elevation). As the trip progresses, it will extrapolate the efficiency of the completed portion of the current trip to the end of the current trip. It does not use efficiency data from trips other than the trip that is underway.
For example, If my current trip route is 40 miles and I've completed 10 averaging 20% more efficient than rated it will project 20% better efficiency for the remaining 30 miles. ie, the gap between the rated line and the projected line will grow proportionally with distance traveled. But, if I cancel the trip at 10 miles, and re-route the remaining 30 miles, it will project rated efficiency for the now 30 mile trip (with adjustments for elevation).
