I would try not to start thinking about retirement that far out ( decade ) unless there was a chance you will save enough to reduce work or retire. It would be detrimental to my motivation to work. I did think about what kind of work place would make my life more enjoyable as retirement got closer.
I was lucky to take a 3 year sabbatical at age 50 then go part- time for part of my 50’s and retire at 60. Of course we lived beneath our means to make that possible.
Someone said you retire when you have had enough and you have enough. That seems to summarize it for me.
I had an easy white collar job with a defense contractor that involved as much travel as I wanted with a great group of folks. Can’t imagine if I had a job that was a grind and had to have it to support a family. Capitalism is not always pretty from a worker’s perspective.
