Perplexity gave me an estimate of about $33,000 for 2025 dividends and cap gains distributions. So this much could have been gifted in 2025 with no tax consequences. It seems that this is a good place to start. Ask for all dividends and distributions to be sent to a cash/money market account and not reinvested. Use this for gifting.
I also am confused by the house being in a trust to avoid the proceeds of a sale being used for medicaid recovery if Dad has so much money that he will never need to touch this $1 million.
The American Funds in this portfolio are pretty straightforward. The load was probably much less than the 5.75% some posts have quoted. And is gone anyway. It is possible that the total fees being paid right now are less than if Dad hired an AUM advisor who used Vanguard index funds. In fact, the relatively low ongoing fees if left as is, are probably the incentive for the advisor to try to stir up some activity.
