Folks like and wear watches for many reasons. Knowing the time is just one of them.I should have added: What's the point of wearing a watch these days? I haven't worn one for many years. If I need to know the time in any country, I just look at my phone. Now that I'm retired, I rarely need to know the time.
I really enjoy watches. I enjoy looking at them. I enjoy wearing them. I enjoy learning about them. I enjoy working on them. I have an appreciation and fascination with the pure genius behind being able to make a mechanical device that can be so precise using very old technology and craftmanship.
My frugal nature won't allow me to buy expensive watches, but I currently own a couple dozen. Most of them are relatively inexpensive, many would consider them "cheap". A couple I consider moderately priced, but true watch fans would consider them inexpensive. I don't care. I don't wear a watch (or clothes or jewelry for that matter) to impress anyone.
I also enjoy non-mechanical watches. Today I'm wearing my Citizen Royal Marines Commando BN0110-06E. It is an Eco-drive in a titanium case with a sapphire crystal in a monocoque design. The think is just about indestructible. It is a watch designed for a purpose and does that well. I'm never going to need a military field watch that is water resistant to 300 meters. All it does it tell the time and date and is powered by the sun. But it gives me pleasure.
So yes. A watch may be redundant if you always have your phone in your hand, but my phone will likely be swapped for a new model in a few years. Not so with most of my watches.
