We have most of this in Seattle right now, except we own our single family home and own a car.
If there is a place (or places) that offer a car-free lifestyle with access to an airport, I guess that would be fine too.
At the moment, all that comes to mind are cities on an Amtrak or similar line, or maybe a few select college towns that run shuttles or the like to a bigger city.
I guess what I’m really looking for is a place that offers a simpler, more accessible life, where I can walk to a nice, complete grocery store, walk to a public library, walk to a clean and green park, hop on a bus or train to go to an airport or doctor or hospital or museum, and not have to deal with house maintenance or car ownership and so on. Just have a life that is more controlled by me than by what I own or am forced to own in order to accomplish daily tasks. I can’t be the only one who would like such a thing, but yet I continually feel like such a place is nearly impossible to find, but maybe I’m just not looking in the right places?
Things we can do in our neighborhood without a car:
Walk to light rail, which takes us to anywhere the light rail goes, including the airport and stadiums.
Walk to the University of Washington campus
Walk to: Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Safeway, H-Mart, other supermarkets.
Walk to the gym, dentist, barber, library, bookstores, pharmacy, several parks.
Pick up the Burke-Gilman trail, a biking trail.
Walk to any number of restaurants and movie theaters
Other features of our neighborhood/area.
Many unhoused people, who sleep on the street, in tents, or in their vehicles
Property crime, usually minor. yesterday someone stole a package from our porch 10 minutes after it was delivered while we were home but before we opened the door to go get.
Assaults and more serious crime are normal in the area, although neither of us has been in a bad situation.
Cost of living is very high.
