I don't think that OP said anything about K-12, though, unless I missed it.

From my understanding, HYPSM and their ilk have pretty huge endowments such that sticker price and actual price are often not highly-correlated.
Many of those schools (especially the Ivies) have only need-based aid and ZERO merit aid. The need-based aid can be extremely generous, but if you don't have a financial need, you should expect to pay full price

I highly recommend looking up the Common Data Set for whatever school you'd like to send your children to. They have a section that lists the percentage of people who get financial aid (and it has buckets of something like 0-25% aid, 25-50, etc). I was shocked to find out that even generous schools that are known for giving out aid still have over half the people paying full price

If you have the means, you should be expecting to pay full price and just be pleasantly surprised if it turns out differently
